Outdoor tips to make the most of your Summer adventure

Summer Activity Guide

Rent a kayak or canoe and spend the day on the river.
Call some friends, pick your paddle and pack your cooler for a day of balance on the wide and peaceful water. If you and your kayak mates get antsy why don’t you play a game of Keep-Away by using your paddle as a racket and slapping a tennis ball around. The ball will seldom go where you want it to so you'll have to paddle across the river or upstream to chase it—or your opponent—down. You'll learn to navigate with dexterity, a skill that's hard to pick up when your kayak is set on "float."

Beat the heat of the summer sun and jump in the water and try water jogging.
Whether it is the heat of summer and you're looking for a cool alternative to running or you've been injured and want to keep in shape or you just want to add a new element to your running routine, water jogging can help. You’ll be running, suspended in water, using all the same muscles, but without the impact and wear 'n tear on your body.

Grab some friends and spend the weekend white water rafting.
Under the guidance of professionals, you’ll learn the difference between paddle and oar rafts, and such techniques as highsiding (jumping to the high side of the raft to avoid flipping), keeping the boat straight and rigging flip lines to right the boat in the event of a capsize. Your best bet: Sign up for a multiday trip, where you'll also learn the basics of river camping, including the age-old art of setting up the river toilet.

Take a run by a body of water, work up a sweat and cool off by taking a dip afterwards.
Find the nearest body of water and plan to work up a sweat. Take a 2-mile run to boost your heart rate and body heat. Finish your run by the water where you can jump on in and cool off from your strenuous workout.

See how you fare on your skis in the water while be pulled by a speed boat.
Power up the speedboat, strap on your skis, grab the rope and get ready to be yanked around the lake at breakneck speed. Here’s a starter tip: Your skis and body must point towards the direction you want to go, face the wake head on. Make sure you force your lower body and the ski through the wakes with both feet first. Enjoy it, you’ll have more, or as much fun, as you did during summers as a kid.
